No more, the green, green grass

After many years of thinking about it and wishing about it I got rid of my lawn, replacing it with gravel. Before I start to effuse about how much better it is I'd like to say that for 10 years I tried to improve the lawn and get it to that bowling green consistency that I craved - all to no avail. Every spring and autumn I spiked it, added sand, feed, mosskiller, the works but it still had damp patches that were mostly moss. Added to the fact that in Autumn/Winter the entire lawn area became unusable just because it was prone to become muddy and churned up. It suffered the same problem infact when it was snowy/frosty - you can't walk on it then either. Anyway, with a heavy heart I decided that the lawn had to go - and now it's gone. I have to say I'm 100% happy with the decision I made, it has made a great difference to the garden overall and its usability.

I redid the edging around the outside: layed it on mortar and Jack did the pointing, then weed killed the grass, layed some membrane and put gravel down. For my own reference I'll now list the exact type of gravel and stones I used: Kelkay Mellow Stone Buff Gravel and Kelkay "Premium" North Sea Cobbles.

With "the lawn" done there is now only one hard landscaping project waiting to be done: the rockery. For this I'm still waiting on Andrew delivering the rock. 8 weeks and counting.......
