Ubuntu FTW!

The hard-drive on my laptop died so I decided to take the plunge and install Ubuntu on it. Now, my laptop doesn't have an optical drive on it (or have an external drive either) so this meant I was going to have to do a USB or Network install.

I'd installed Fedora (Core 8 I think) from a USB Flash key previously but I remember the process being a bit drawn out and convoluted. Luckily this time however I found UNetbootin (see links for details). This app allows you easily create a bootable image from a Linux ISO onto a Flash Drive. Basically it deals with the MBR and Syslinux stuff for you and expands the ISO correctly.

So the overall process was:

1. Download Ubuntu ISO.
2. Use UNetbootin to create bootable USB flash.
3. Start laptop with USB drive in port (after updating bios to boot from usb)
4. Ubuntu boots!
5. Choose the "install" option - which is a big icon on the desktop - and answer a few questions.
6. Restart laptop.
7. Ubuntu is now installed and ready to use.

And might I add that Ubuntu correctly idenified and activated the Wireless AND Bluetooth devices.

I have to admit I was VERY impressed :)
