We've won the league again, fly the flag!

Yes you read it right, we, Celtic, won the League again. Not of course that it'll come as any surprise to students of the SPL as we've been running away with it since November of last year. As the papers would say, the title race had turned into a procession. Not surprisingly Celtic had went of the boil infact I think it'd be fair to say that we've not played well since the double header with AC Milan - being up seventeen points ahead in the league can do that to you. Let's face it, after that epic Champions League struggle (where we performed better on aggregate than Man U) the day to day of the Scottish League must be a bit of chore.

So it was with not much hope of a good day's entertainment that me, David, Bob and Karen headed to O'Briens in the Saltmarket to watch the "league winning" game against the "Killie Boys". Celtic got of to a good start with JVH knocking in (a header?) from close range early in the first half. As per has been our wont though for the last few months the goal seemed to knock the stuffing out of us, leading us to sit back further and further. This was a scenario we'ed seen far too often over the last few weeks! It was hardly surprising then when Killie got the equaliser after a cut back in the box rendered our all too static defence impotent.

As the minutes came and went the punters in the pub were getting more and more restless, with the general ambience getting angrier and angrier. The clock ticked it's way into injury time in the second half.....however, come the hour, cometh the man. The yet to be crowned "Player of the Year" Shunshuke Nakamura teed up a dead ball about twenty five yards out - "He can't do it again, can he?". YES!!!! A perfectly executed free kick found the ball nestling in the back of the net. Naka in an unusual show of emotion ripped his top off and ran into the crowd just as the referee was blowing full time! The pub exploded into a riot of hugs, songs, cheers and general good natured celebrations.

We spent some time soaking up the atmosphere before finishing our drinks and heading off up the Gallowgate to see what was happening. As we approached Bairds we could see the usual street party in full flow. Coppers had blocked off the road allowing the troops to spill out to the other side. It was at this point, among the flag waving and singing, that one of the more surreal incidents of the day happened: A japansese TV crew had been in Bairds filming during the match and they were now interviewing the punters in the street. They clocked David as he was carrying a massive flag and proceeded to interview him for Japanese tele'! The general gist of the interview seemed to be:

Interviewer: "Who is prayer of the year?"
David: Nakamura
Interviewer: "Who is prayer of the year?"
David: NAKAMURA
Interviewer: "Who is prayer of the year?"
David: N A K A M U R A !!

You can catch videos of the interview and

After that twilight zone moment we grabbed a baxi up to David's local. Luckily for us the taxi driver was "Celtic minded" and blasted out the Pogues on the way up the road. The journey, for me anyway, was actually one of the highlights of the day; rattling along, in good company, singing our little hearts out! Ah, sweet moments indeed.

Even by the time we got to David's house our spirits hadn't dampened: The stereo went on immediately with us dancing around his sitting room to the "rebel songs". All good things must come to an end however, by eight I was starting to feel guilty about Jackie being stuck in the house with Becky so I made my excuses and left - not that I minded though as, all-in-all, I'd have a brill day.

As well as the pics there are a few movie clips here, here and here.
