Happy Families
I guess I should've written this entry a long time ago, six weeks to be precise, but if you read on I'm sure you'll sympathise with the reason(s) for my tardiness.
Six weeks ago to the day, at 2.20pm on 27/03/2007, my daughter Rebecca "Becky" Tierney was born weighting 8lbs 2oz! Jackie went into labour early in the morning and by seven am it was time to get into the hospital. We were booked into the midwife unit where the staff prefer the fathers to have a more hands on approach i.e. helping with "positions" etc. Strangely I was a bit embarassed about this at first but I soon got into the swing of things: "Push push". The labour eventually got to the point where the doctor was considering doing a "section" but a few "big pushes" later from the hard-working Jackie and out popped the young'un :) Looking rather like a "chest buster" from Aliens I have to say....
She, Becky, lulled us (we at least me) into a false sense of security: For the first few days she was very quiet and slept a lot - as it turns out this is often the case with new borns. Even when we got her home she was only waking up once or maybe twice in the night. Suffice to say those halceon days are long gone now.
Thanks to my role as Company Managing Director (*cof cof*) and a good agent I managed to get three weeks paternity leave and after that a further month working from home. This was good as it let me go out for walks with Jackie and Becky and generally hang around with them quite a lot. I really pity the fathers that only get the standard two weeks. I didn't think that the transition from childless to with children would be easy but to be honest even though it's felt like I haven't been doing much I was/am tired quite a lot of the time - I guess that's the interrupted sleep talking it's toll. The thing I find hardest is keeping my levels of concentration up and keeping my blood pressure down!
For all that though Becky is a gift. Everyday I notice her doing something new and usually cute which makes all of the "hard work" worth it. Hopefully this will last for a long long time.
